Improvements in power and alpha that can be achieved by increasing the number of measurements and their relationship to the correlation. For power (top four panels), a two-sided significance level of 5% has been used (and a CV of zero, see below). Critical alpha values (bottom two panels, power 85%) can be lowered by making multiple measurements (see text for explanation). The programs for generating these relationships are available in the Excel Web appendix (STARS.xls, under ‘Other’)
