Conceptual model: an ambitious study is more likely to have greater general scientific utility, and may require more extensive scientific collaboration, hence a greater number of co-authors. General scientific utility drives all citations – citations by others, but also self-citations. Authors’ self-referential usage drives self-citations only. Rectangles represent observed variables; ovals represent latent variables. Collective self-citations encompass the self-citations by all k co-authors
